Degrees and training
I have a PhD in Zoology, in which I investigated the evolutionary aspects of lacertid lizards. I have attended a number of conferences and workshops to bolster my knowledge of evolutionary biology and techniques to investigate natural systems from an evolutionary viewpoint.
Lab research activities
I began the ZEML lab in 2015 and, with my students, we investigate animal and plant evolution using molecular techniques, morphometric techniques and link these aspects with environmental variables.
Professional activities
I am the Chair of the Animal Ethics Committee, I am an Associate Editor for the African Journal of Herpetology, I was the organiser of the 2019 HAA conference, I am the external examiner for 2 South African universities, I have reviewed a number of journal articles and research project proposals for the NRF and NSF.
Teaching and student supervision
I lecture undergrad (second and third year) (Zoology & Entomology: evolution and molecular techniques) and BSc Honours (Zoology) (Molecular Biology and Statistics) students. I have also supervised a number of students who have graduated with science degrees.
Scientific Articles and Book Chapters
I have published multple articles in peer-reviewed journals and one book chapter. My research includes taxonomic investigations and evolutionary investigations using a multidisciplinary approach (genetics, morphometrics, dietary analyses, functional analyses).
Activities involving the community
I am the founding member of the Makhanda Science Cafe. Together with my PhD student, Chad Keates, I have presented snake talks to high school students and Field Rangers. I was the organiser of the Departmental Science days. I was a judge for the National Science Expo.
